7. Silent Installation

DocuWorks Viewer Light can be installed silently. In a silent installation, installation is completed without Install Wizard being displayed and without the user performing any operation. Silent install is useful when batch-installing DocuWorks Viewer Light on many PCs.
During silent installation, the system uses defaults for the settings such as the destination folder, and whether to use DocuWorks Viewer Light Control. These default settings can also be customized by using the method described in "8. Customizing Installation".

7-1. How to Perform a Silent Installation

There are two ways of executing a silent installation.
  • By using the "Setup.exe" command appended with the /s option
  • By editing the "dwvlt.ini" file and executing "Setup.exe"

7-2. Executing Silent Installation Using the "Setup.exe" Command Appended with the "/s" Option

Execute "Setup.exe /s" at the command prompt or in a batch file.

7-3. Programming Silent Installation Settings to the "dwvlt.ini" File

You can create a text file named "dwvlt.ini" that describes the silent installation settings, and save this file in the folder in which "Setup.exe" is stored, and then execute "Setup.exe".
  1. Open the "dwvlt.ini" file with a text editor, and add the following sections:
    [Install]
    SilentInstall=Y

    Important
You need to choose Unicode as character encoding to create the "dwvlt.ini" file. When editing the file, be sure to use an application which is capable to save the file with Unicode encoding.
  2. Save the changes made to the "dwvlt.ini" file, and execute "Setup.exe".

7-4. License Agreement After Silent Installation Is Performed

When a silent installation has been performed, the license agreement is displayed when DocuWorks Viewer Light is started up for the first time.

8. Customizing Installation

You can customize the settings such as the destination folder, and whether to use DocuWorks Viewer Light Control. Customized settings can be applied to both regular installation and silent installation.

8-1. Creating a Customized Installation Setup File

You can create a text file named "dwvlt.ini" that describes the installation settings, and save this file in the folder in which "Setup.exe" is stored. The program will be installed according to the settings described in this file.
If you want to place the setup file for customized installation in a different folder than the one where "Setup.exe" is stored, execute the "Setup.exe" command with the /o option to specify the full path to the setup file for customized installation.

Setup.exe /o "full path to the setup file for customized installation"

8-2. Format of Customized Installation Setup File

The format of this file is the same as that for a regular Windows ini file. Program keys and values on the same line joined by "= (symbol)".
[Section Name1]
Key 1 = value 1
Key 2 = value 2
[Section Name2]
Key 1 = value 1
Key 2 = value 2
  • [Section Name1] corresponds to the dialog box that is displayed at installation or the installation settings that do not belong to the dialog box.

11-2. Manipulating Signed Documents

11-3. About Byte-serving Function

When a DocuWorks file on the website contains many pages, it may take a long time to download and display the entire file. Use of the byte-serving function will reduce the display time by downloading only pages required for display if the file size is larger than specified.

11-3-1. Operations Affected by Byte-serving

When the byte-serving function is activated, partial download is performed to display a DocuWorks file, to navigate pages, to display link destinations, to print the file, and to save the file.

11-3-2. Requirements for Byte-serving

  • Files must be Ver. 2 or later to be displayed.
  • The Web server must support the byte-serving function and the function must be activated on the server. The following servers are compatible:
    • Apache 2.4.54
    • Microsoft Internet Information Services 10
  • To display a DocuWorks file on the system that runs on a Web server and uses CGI, the system must support the byte-serving function and operate to return the URL of the DocuWorks file.

11-4. About Support for ActiveX Controls

DocuWorks Viewer Light Control supports ActiveX controls. You can view and print DocuWorks files with ActiveX controls containers.
The control name of DocuWorks Viewer Light Control is [DocuWorks Viewer Light Control].
For details, refer to "DocuWorks Development Tool Kit 10 DocuWorks Viewer Control / DocuWorks Viewer Light Control Interface Specification".

11-5. Displaying DocuWorks files Embedded in HTML

Use the following tag to embed DocuWorks files into HTML.
<EMBED Attribute="Value"></EMBED>
The attribute and value must be specified as follows.
Attribute Value
SRC Name of DocuWorks file to embed
WIDTH Width of the DocuWorks file, in pixels (If omitted, depends on browser)
HEIGHT Height of the DocuWorks file, in pixels (If omitted, depends on browser)
PAGE Pages of the DocuWorks file (If omitted, page 1)
SHEAF Name of the document in the binder (If omitted, none)
  • SRC must be specified.
  • You can specify multiple attributes by entering a space to between them.
  • The zoom rate of the display (or the print result) of the DocuWorks file is automatically decided by the specified width and height. It is displayed (or printed) by the specified width or height fitting to center of the window (or paper).
  • The zoom rate available is between 10% and 1600%. If you specify a rate beyond this limit, an X mark is displayed (or printed) in the window (or paper) and the DocuWorks file is not displayed (or printed).
  • If you specify a zoom rate near 10% and even if the DocuWorks file is displayed, only an X mark may be printed on the paper if the rate for printing falls below 10%. The same thing happens for specifying a zoom rate near 1600%.
  • For PAGE, if you specify a page number which does not exist, the last page of the DocuWorks file is displayed.
  • You can specify a page of the internal document by using SHEAF. If the specified internal document does not exist, the action will be the same as specifying sheaf="internal document name" in the URL.
  • According to the specified width and height, the zoom ratio calculated may have slight error. In that case, the DocuWorks file may not fit to the width or height of the window.
  • Tags other than the above one will not affect display of DocuWorks files.
For example, the following tag embeds the SAMPLE.XDW file into HTML.
<EMBED SRC="sample.xdw" WIDTH="300" HEIGHT="300"></EMBED>
If WIDTH is between 65 and 2488 pixels, and HEIGHT is between 90 and 3518 pixels, then embedded file (A4, Portrait) will be displayed correctly. If the % parameter can be used to specify WIDTH and HEIGHT, then the document size will be adjusted to the size of the window when displayed, or size of the paper when printed.

11-6. Setting Up Web Server

11-6-1. Notes for Server Administrators Newly Publishing DocuWorks files to the Web

DocuWorks Viewer Light uses the following MIMEType and extension. Be sure to set up the Web server accordingly. Some Web servers have these entries defined. For Web servers without such entries, specify these values manually.
MIMEType
application/vnd.fujifilm.fb.docuworks
Extension
xdw
MIMEType
application/vnd.fujifilm.fb.docuworks.binder
Extension
xbd
MIMEType
aapplication/vnd.fujifilm.fb.docuworks.container
Extension
xct

11-6-2. Notes for Server Administrators Who Have Already Published DocuWorks files to the Web

If the following MIME types are set in your web server, you need to change the settings to the MIME types described above: application/vnd.fujixerox.docuworks, application/vnd.fujixerox.docuworks.binder, application/vnd.fujixerox.docuworks.container, and application/x-fx-xdw.
Important
In a previous version of DocuWorks Viewer Light, using the MIME type may cause DocuWorks files not to display. In this case, install the latest version of DocuWorks Viewer Light on the client PC.

12. Notes and Restrictions

The following explains notes and restrictions for operating DocuWorks Viewer Light and DocuWorks Viewer Light Control. The system errors in this documentation refer to any application errors and faults that cause the windows to close and Microsoft Windows to forcibly shut down.

12-1. Operation

12-1-1. DocuWorks Viewer Light

  • Depending on the application, the printing may be processed in different order from the displayed text order. Because the text information within the DocuWorks document converted from those applications is held in a different order from the displayed text order, the search result may not be in the displayed order. (5572)
  • Depending on the settings of applications or fonts, characters may be printed as images. If this happens, the converted DocuWorks documents hold no text information and cannot be searched using text search. (6537)
  • When you install DocuWorks Viewer Light 8 in an environment where one of the DocuWorks versions 6.0 to 7.x is installed, module names displayed in the [Security Module Options] dialog box of Desk and Viewer are changed as follows, and the display order is also changed.
    • "Password (V4 compatible)" → "Password (56bit V4 or later)"
    • "Password (128bit V4 non-compatible)" → "Password (128bit V5 or later)"

12-1-2. DocuWorks Viewer Light Control

  • When displaying a DocuWorks file on a browser, on which a link annotation has been pasted in DocuWorks Viewer Light Control, if a local path or UNC path is used to specify the link file location under [File] in the [DocuWorks File Settings] dialog box, you may not be able to display the file properly, or may not be able to specify the page number or the document within a binder, depending on the browser in use. (4167, 11545, 13658)
  • Depending on the application, the printing may be processed in the different order from the displayed text order. Because the text information within the DocuWorks document converted from those applications is held in a different order from the displayed text order, the search result may not be in the displayed order. (5572)
  • Depending on the settings of applications or fonts, characters may be printed as images. If this happens, the converted DocuWorks documents hold no text information and so cannot be searched using text search. (6537)
  • The byte-serving feature may not function when displaying DocuWorks files from a client on the Web server in DocuWorks Viewer Light Control. This is because DocuWorks Viewer Light Control adds the current time to the header information to communicate with the Web server. You can avoid this problem by setting the time of the Web server side later than that of the client side. (7233)
  • If a transparent annotation is layered over signatures, you cannot verify the signatures or other manipulations on the layered portion. (11172)
  • In Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (except for Internet Explorer mode), after you move from a tab on which a DocuWorks file is displayed to another page, you may not be able to go back to the previously displayed page even if you click the web browser's [Go back] and [Go forward] button.
  • When you open a DocuWorks file in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (except for Internet Explorer mode), the default file name displayed in the file saving dialog box at the time you run [Save a Copy] may differ from the file name on the web site.
  • When [Site access] is set to [On click] under the Google Chrome's Extensions settings, or when [Site access] is set to [On click] under the Microsoft Edge's Extensions settings (excluding Internet Explorer mode), even if you attempt to open a DocuWorks file after clicking the extension icon, the extension feature does not work, and the DocuWorks file is downloaded.

12-2. Viewing and Printing

12-2-1. DocuWorks Viewer Light

  • In some applications, it may be difficult to see the color difference in printout than that in the data being viewed on the screen. If you convert this type of data to a DocuWorks file, the color in the file may appear different from the original data. (46)
  • When you convert some application data to a DocuWorks file, patterns in the data may appear to be "filled" when viewed on the screen. However, this problem will not happen when you print the file. (51)
  • Patterns in the DocuWorks files created from some applications may not be displayed correctly. However, this problem will not happen when you print the file. (65)
  • If an application file contains hatch patterns, when you convert it to DocuWorks file, it may appear different from the original data when viewed in its application. However, this problem will not happen when you print the DocuWorks file. (174)
  • If the screen display is set to less than 256 colors, then color in a DocuWorks file will appear dithered pattern. However, this problem will not happen when you print the file. (174)
  • If a DocuWorks file is created from application data containing bitmaps and color patterns, it may take a while to display the file in DocuWorks Viewer Light. Also if a text annotation exceeds a certain size, its text may be displayed as slash lines. (670)
  • If you are converting files that were created by Adobe® PageMaker® 6.0 of Adobe Systems Corporation and that contain characters having emphasis marks, to DocuWorks files, those marks may be corrupted and displayed as A or B on DocuWorks Viewer. This is because Adobe® PageMaker® outputs emphasis marks (dots) using a special font and sets it as being available when starting up the application. This problem occurs when Adobe® PageMaker® is not installed on your computer or it has never been started before the file containing those marks is displayed. (680)
  • When you print a DocuWorks file containing ("&") mark in its file name, the "&" mark will not be shown as a file name in the dialog box which appears during printing. Also, an underline will be shown to the next of the "&" mark. (904)
  • When you create a DocuWorks file from the Acrobat® data, characters of some alphabetical and symbolic fonts may be changed to strange symbols. (1270)
  • If the size of text annotations exceeds the given size, text parts are displayed in shaded patterns. (1529)
  • When you print a DocuWorks file containing graphics filled with shades or patterns to a GDI, ESC/Page, or PostScript® printer, the print result may differ from the case where the data is printed directly from its application software. (1861, 2247)
  • When a DocuWorks file created from Freelance is printed to HP Laser Jet 4V, the underscore and strikethrough lines may not be printed and may become white. (1904)
  • When you print a DocuWorks file created from application data with long width to a PostScript® printer, the portion filled with patterns (such as vertical, horizontal, or slanted line hatch patterns) may appear rotated by 90 degrees. (1908)
  • The first character appearing in a line may be printed in the middle of the line or at the end of the line when printing DocuWorks files using a PCL5 printer (manufactured by Hewlett-Packard Co.). (2019)
  • When a DocuWorks file created from Lotus® 1-2-3 is printed to HP Laser Jet 4V, part of the background pattern of graphs may be missing. (2039)
  • When a DocuWorks file containing 1-point FreeHand annotations is printed to HP LaserJet 4V, some of the annotations may be printed as dotted lines. (2078)
  • When you print selecting [Force to Print Slash Pattern for Transparent Color] in the [Print] dialog box, while transparent color will be replaced with slash pattern, the slash lines may interfere with the pattern in color and result in dirty spots. (2149)
  • Depending on the display card used, the right edge of the body text may not be displayed in specific zoom ratio. If this happens, change the performance settings of the display card. (6992)
  • When you display or print a DocuWorks document created by Microsoft PowerPoint or the like under Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition(Windows Me), textures and shading may be displayed or printed in different pattern from that in the original document. (7538)
  • When printing a DocuWorks document created from a Lotus SuperOffice® file, white lines may appear in the gradation. (7601)
  • When displaying a DocuWorks document created from a Quark Xpress® file that has any rotated images or pasted images, white lines may appear on these images. (7618)
  • When displaying and/or printing a DocuWorks document created from a Quark Xpress® file that has any rotated images or pasted images, small black dots may appear on these images. (7622)
  • Images and graphics that are contained in Microsoft Office documents and set to be transparent may be displayed as filled or outlined when being converted to DocuWorks documents. If this occurs, decrease the resolution when converting to DocuWorks documents. (11122)
  • Depending on the drawing method for printing application data, images or symbols may be partially outlined or extra lines may be inserted when displaying the file after it is converted from a DocuWorks document. (11125, 14044)
  • If the gradation or transparent images are displayed with [Smooth the edges of characters converted to bitmap format or graphics data] enabled, lines that are not contained in the image data may be displayed or images may be discolored. (11139)
  • It may take a while for DocuWorks Viewer Light to display DocuWorks documents created from Microsoft PowerPoint documents that contain dotted lines or circles. In this case, select [DocuWorks Viewer Light Options] from the [File] menu of DocuWorks Viewer Light. In the [View] tab of the [DocuWorks Viewer Light Options] dialog box, uncheck the box next to [Smooth the edges of characters converted to the bitmap format or graphics data]. (12001)
  • Line annotations created in DocuWorks 7 or later may be blurred depending on the display magnification when they are displayed in DocuWorks 6 or earlier. Line annotations are displayed by raising the display magnification. (15149)
  • If a DocuWorks document contains the following characters with changed font width, it may not be displayed as expected.
    • UD Digi Kyokasho N-R
    • UD Digi Kyokasho N-B
    • BIZ UDGothic
    • BIZ UDMincho Medium
  • The following items are excluded from a text search.
    • A text string that spans multiple pages.
    • Headers and footers specified in Viewer.
    • Image documents that are not OCR-processed.
    • Application pages which text cannot be recognized as selectable text.
    • Application pages which text is recognized as an image or an object, not as selectable text.
    • When the search target text is broken up by line feed.
    • Documents which are not properly OCR-processed.
    • Documents which are printed with text in different order compare to what is displayed on the screen.

12-2-2. DocuWorks Viewer Light Control

  • When the display is switched from embedded view to full screen view, the first page will be displayed at 100% zoom ratio, and annotation display will always be turned on. (2216)
  • In the following cases, a DocuWorks file embedded in HTML may be displayed or printed as "X" at the location where it is embedded:
    • When WIDTH and HEIGHT are set so that the zoom ratio of the file is less than 10% or more than 1600%.
If this happens, reduce the values of WIDTH and HEIGHT. (2321)
  • If you open and print a rotated DocuWorks file with Microsoft Excel 2000, Microsoft Excel 2000 will print the file with its character strings not rotated due to the restrictions of Microsoft Excel 2000. (5744)
  • Depending on the display card used, the right edge of the body text may not be displayed in specific zoom ratio. If this happens, change the performance settings of the display card. (6992)
  • It may take a while for DocuWorks Viewer Light Control to display DocuWorks documents created from Microsoft PowerPoint documents that contain dotted lines or circles. In this case, select [DocuWorks Viewer Light Control Options] from the DocuWorks Viewer Light Control pop-up menu. Then from the [View] tab in the displayed dialog box, uncheck the box next to [Smooth the edges of characters converted to the bitmap format or graphics data]. (12001)
  • In the following instances, the DocuWorks files on the FTP server may not be displayed. (13037, 13396)
    • When any double-byte characters are used in the file name.
    • When displaying the DocuWorks files via Proxy server.
  • In a web application which transmits a form data to display a DocuWorks document, when refreshing the browser after displaying a DocuWorks document, it is not displayed properly. (13990)
  • When displaying a page of internal document by the sheaf attribution or displaying a page with linked annotation by the link title attribution, if the page contains following characters as attribute value, assigned attribution does not come into effect. (14052)
    • single byte space character
    • &
    • #
  • Line annotations created in DocuWorks 7 or later may be blurred depending on the display magnification when they are displayed in DocuWorks 6 or earlier. Line annotations are displayed by raising the display magnification. (15149)
  • When you display a DocuWorks file in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (except for Internet Explorer mode), it is opened in another tab rather than displayed in embedded form.

12-3. Printer Driver Settings

12-3-1. DocuWorks Viewer Light

  • For a DocuWorks document created from application data, be sure to set the print resolution of the file to that used in conversion. Otherwise, the print result of the DocuWorks file may differ from that of the application data. (623)
  • If DocuWorks files are printed with the ESC/Page Printer (manufactured by EPSON) on which [EMF] is set as the spool data format, the Windows system may not be able to operate after printing is completed. In this case, set the spool data format to [RAW] or set to disable spooling. (1881)
  • Depending on the printer driver in use, DocuWorks files created from large bitmaps may not be printed correctly. For example, a PostScript® printer cannot correctly print DocuWorks files created from A2-3010dpi equivalent (4960 x 7015 dots) or A3-600dpi equivalent (7015 x 9921 dots) monochrome bitmaps. In this case, be sure to decrease the printer driver's resolution. (2182)
  • When printed from Microsoft Edge or a store app to DocuWorks Printer, texts are converted to diagrams in the DocuWorks document. In this case, the text in the DocuWorks document cannot be selected and the size of the DocuWorks document might be large. (24246)

12-4. Memory and Performance

12-4-1. DocuWorks Viewer Light

  • When there is not sufficient memory, image of the DocuWorks file page may not appear and you will see an "X" in the page. To solve this problem, reduce the zoom ratio, or close other running applications and then restart DocuWorks Viewer Light. (21)
  • When you print a DocuWorks files created from complex data (pattern fill, gradation, heavy use of bitmap, etc.) to a PostScript® printer, the PostScript® data may become bigger in size. This may result in longer printing time of the original data or the print's capacity may be exceeded. (2030)

12-4-2. DocuWorks Viewer Light Control

  • The number of DocuWorks files that can be displayed in embedded view in a page depends on the memory and disk space of the client machine. Therefore, be careful with the resources when viewing pages with many embedded DocuWorks files. (2290)
  • It may be failed to certify digital signature on a file with more than hundreds MB depending on the size of the memory region which your computer can allocate. (12535)

12-5. Byte-serving for DocuWorks Viewer Light Control

  • When using a byte-serving function to display a DocuWorks file that is located on a Web server, depending on the Proxy server in use, an error message “The file is not a DocuWorks document file.” may appear on the screen to prevent you from displaying the file. In this case, display the file without byte-serving. (13754)

13. DocuWorks Content Filter 10

DocuWorks Content Filter 10 is software that is compatible with the Windows Search Service interface (IFilter) in Microsoft Windows 10 and Microsoft Windows 11.
This filter is called by document search software when it creates search indexes. It extracts from DocuWorks files full-text information and document properties which document search software requires.
Installing DocuWorks Viewer Light 10 also installs DocuWorks Content Filter 10. This will make DocuWorks files searchable by Windows Search Service.

13-1. Supported Document Search Software

The following document search software tools are supported:
  • Windows Search Service

13-2 How and What It Extracts

13-2-1. Supported DocuWorks Files

  • DocuWorks documents
  • DocuWorks binders
  • DocuWorks containers
DocuWorks Content Filter supports DocuWorks 10 or earlier DocuWorks files.
It can handle protected documents if those are in the following conditions. Copying permission is required in all the cases.
  • Password-protected DocuWorks files for which no password to open is assigned
  • Password-protected DocuWorks files for which password to open is stored temporarily.
  • Signature-protected DocuWorks files for which Signature Case is open and no user intervention is required to open it
  • DocuWorks files that are protected by Context Service and are allowed to log in to the context server.

13-2-2. Content To Be Extracted

DocuWorks Content Filter can extract the following information and document properties from a DocuWorks file.
Extracted Item Description
Content [Contents] - Body text
- OCR (optical character recognition) resulting text
- Text from text annotations
(This includes text on notepad annotations)
Document name [DocTitle] Document title set in [Document Properties]
Subject [DocSubject] Document subject set in [Document Properties]
Author [DocAuthor] Author Author set in [Document Properties]
Keyword [DocKeywords] Keywords set in [Document Properties]
Comment [DocComments] Comment text set in [Document Properties]
User defined attributes User defined attributes set in [Document Properties]
Application name [DocAppName] Application name. This is always [DocuWorks].
* Text surrounded by parentheses indicates the corresponding property name, which is described in Help for Windows Search Service. However, you can use any property names for the user defined attributes.

13-2-3. Extraction Method

DocuWorks Content Filter extracts data from DocuWorks files by using the following mechanism.
The order in which text is extracted
As for "Content", it first extracts body text (alternatively, OCR resulting text), and then text annotations. More specifically, it extracts body text from the first page through to the last page, and then go back to the first page to begin extracting text annotations.
The position of line breaks
Line break character is inserted between body text (alternatively, OCR resulting text) and text annotation, and between text annotations
Line break character is also inserted at the end of the last text annotation.

13-3. Notes and Restrictions

  • Proper operation of DocuWorks Content Filter is not guaranteed if you uninstall DocuWorks or modules related to DocuWorks after DocuWorks Content Filter has been installed. In this case, you must install DocuWorks Content Filter again to re-register the missing registry keys.
  • If you allow Windows Search Service to index a DocuWorks file with the file open, the process will not complete. In this case, close the opened document to complete the process. For more information, see the online reference supplied with Windows Search Service. (3396)
  • When using DocuWorks Content Filter for DocuWorks documents containing OCR (optical character recognition) resulting text, the accuracy of the extracted text information depends on the OCR process results.
  • In the environment where DocuWorks Content Filter is installed together with DocuWorks or DocuWorks Viewer Light, protected files for which copying permission is assigned and password to open is stored temporarily, may be included in searching.
  • If Windows Search Service has failed in indexing DocuWorks files due to password to open assigned, no index is displayed under [Unfiltered Docs] in Windows Search Service. (5217)
  • Some applications process data for printing in the order that is different from the order of the character sequence appearing on the display.
Thus, internal text information in documents converted by such an application is retained in the different order from that appearing on the display, and therefore, the resulted order of text information derived from DocuWorks Content Filter can be different from that of the display. (5572)
  • Depending on the application type or the font settings, characters are handled as images during print processing. In this case, there is no text information in the converted DocuWorks documents any more, and therefore those documents will never be searched for. (6537)
  • For a document containing a huge number of characters (for example, one million of characters or more), the system cannot registered data to be used for searching for the document. This may cause the document not to be searched for by Windows Search Service. (13243)
  • Any pages, derived from OCR processing of the Chinese version of DocuWorks 5.x, cannot be searched for by Windows Search Service.
